Nikolay Shkodenko was born in a small town near Kiev in 1934.

He graduated from the Institute of Architecture and Urban Construction of Kiev in 1959, after which he worked several years as a director of design for the Institute of Urban Design & Construction. During this time Shkodenko was rewarded twice the Republican Prize for architecture, namely for the Urban design of Downtown of Chernigov in 1974 and for the conceptual design of Opera Theatre and urban design for reconstruction of the surrounding neighborhood of Kreschatik, Kiev in 1979.

During his practice in KievZNEEAP he has won other awards as well, including the First Prize in 1981 for the urban design of Yalta sea shore competition, a project which has been constructed, and the Architect of the Ukraine Award from the Professional Association of Architects of Ukraine in 1986.

In 1968 Shkodenko became a member of the Union of Architects of Ukraine, as well as of the Union of Architects of Russian Federation.

Shkodenko has worked as a chief of Giprograd since the year of 1980.
